Launch Review Roundup

Duskfade left embargo on August 13, 2026. This hub is a roundup, not a substitute for playing the demo or reading a full critic essay. Scores move; store pages remain the purchase button. Snapshot a day after launch

Metacritic listed a Generally Favorable aggregate in the high 70s (coverage on launch day cited roughly 78–79 from around 15–16 critic reviews). Individual outlets split along a familiar line: everyone praises the level design, verticality, and charm; many call combat basic or floaty; a few find the writing too cartoon for the grief theme.

Steam sat at Very Positive on launch weekend — about 90% of ~85 Steam-purchaser reviews in early tallies, with a wider “all reviews” pool still in the same neighborhood. That continues the demo’s ~91% mood rather than reversing it.

DualShockers scored 9/10, calling it a love letter to PS2 3D platformers that still finds its own fairy-tale identity. COGconnected landed 75, liking traversal and collectibles while dinging familiar art and thin combat. GameHype highlighted Ezarus Forest, Celestial Kingdom, and the Father Gorth cloud fight. GamingTrend called boss design and aesthetic top-tier and estimated ~11 hours to credits, longer for 100%.

The embedded video is a gameplay-focused review/analysis useful for camera and combat complaints you will also see in Steam threads. It began life around the demo; read it as feel, not as a spoiler of Despair.

What reviewers agree on

Movement is the game. Double jump, air dash, Grapple resets, rail grind, and the little-taught jump-then-dodge long jump carry the campaign. Worlds are handcrafted and vertical — Ezarus Forest, Lantern Port, cloud kingdoms — with no mini-map and lots of delayed loot. Bosses mix damage phases with timed platforming stun breaks and strong music. Tick Town’s theme drawing Twilight Town comparisons is now a running joke because it is accurate.

The story is a picture book about grief. Allira, Gramps Tristan, Despair’s shackle imagery, and Cuckoo’s banter. Cutscenes carry more voice than overworld chatter. If you hate DreamWorks-style gags interrupting sad scenes, factor that in. If you want Jak-and-Daxter warmth with a Keyblade silhouette, you are the audience Fireshine sold.

What reviewers argue about

Combat stays simple: light/heavy strings, projectile bats, perfect-dodge Temporal Shift, gadgets. Lock-on and floaty hit-stop annoy some players. Enemies can feel polite. The Traveler’s early upgrades do not remix the loop enough for action-game fans. Those complaints showed up in demo analyses and did not vanish at launch. They also did not tank scores, because Duskfade never promised Devil May Cry.

Difficulty is generally approachable. Platinum hunters call Story Mode valid for 100%. That is a plus for a weekend campaign and a minus if you wanted a masocore platformer.

Should you buy it at $29.99?

Yes if you miss Jak, Ratchet, and Kingdom Hearts 2’s world-tour pacing, you like collectathons, and you will use Grapple in boss fights instead of mashing. Steam’s 20% introductory discount through August 27 lowers the experiment cost. Xbox Play Anywhere and Steam Deck Verified help if you bounce between screens. No Deluxe SKU to overthink.

Wait or demo first if camera-heavy 3D platformers make you queasy, you need deep combat trees, or you only have a Switch 2 and want the reported August 20 demo before paying. The Steam / PS5 / Xbox demo still exists and does not transfer saves.

Length: credits in the low teens to twenty hours; Platinum often 9–12 hours on Story if you stay focused, longer if you hate backtracking without a map. See trophies and story walkthrough.

How this wiki uses reviews

We cite public scores and named mechanics. We do not invent Metacritic user-score drama. When patches land, they go on Updates. System specs stay on PC requirements. This page will age; store widgets will not.

Single-player, no co-op, no Game Pass day-one placement in launch coverage. Cloud play on Xbox is store-feature text, not a “free with Game Pass” claim.

If a thumbnail promises “Duskfade is dead,” compare it to the actual Very Positive queue and the generally favorable critic cluster. Charm-first platformers always attract both “goty sleeper” posts and “combat is mid” posts. Both can be true.
