Duskfade Story Walkthrough
Region order, ability gates, and when to backtrack — without dumping the Clock Tower ending on the first screen.
Duskfade is linear in chapter order and Metroidvania in secrets. You always return to Tick Town after breaking another chain / lock that weakens the Clock Tower. Each adventure is typically three to four zones feeding one emotional boss, then a hub restock. This walkthrough gives that spine so you stop wondering whether you missed a continent. Exact room names shift with patches; treat biome names and ability gates as the stable facts.
If you only want the free slice, the demo walkthrough still covers workshop through Wrath. Demo progress does not carry into the retail save. The video above is IGN’s opening 13 minutes — useful for movement feel, not a substitute for later biomes.
How the campaign is structured
Zirian leaves the workshop after Despair drags Allira into the Tower and eternal night settles on Tearfeld. Cuckoo — implied to be Allira’s clockwork bird — travels with you. Grandfather Tristan (Master XII) hangs over the plot; narrative designer Ricardo Chorques Mesa has said grief for a grandfather shaped those beats. You are not grinding levels. You are collecting Upgrade Gears, Clock Heart Pieces, and Star Core Fragments while unlocking verbs: Blast, Grapple, glide, rails, and later the Pendulum sword form that smashes orange crystals.
There is no mini-map. Landmarks, Cuckoo hints, and Tick Town’s teleporter are the navigation. When a ledge looks impossible, add a dodge roll onto the second jump or wait for a later gadget. That habit is the whole game.
Opening: Tick Town and the first chain
Clear the workshop, meet Cuckoo, and learn Minutero as both weapon and chest key. Tick Town sells flasks, ingots, and gossip. Break the Temporal Anchor when the story asks — that is the Silver We Fixed Time, Right? and your permission slip to leave the hub properly.
The first major spoke is Ezarus Forest, the gloomy woods reviewers name as the journey’s real start. Expect ink-like enemies, canopy Grapple points you cannot use yet, and the demo’s forest / mine / ruin curriculum if you already played the slice. Wrath is the opening emotional test: interrupt charged attacks from rim platforms, do not face-tank. Spend gears on mobility before you pride-check the lava ring.
Mid-game: Academy, Pendulum, desert light
Back to School fires when you find the Clockwork Academy, described in guides as an underwater academy. This is a major tool gate. Near the end of that arc you unlock Pendulum, which breaks orange crystals that have been mocking you since Tick Town. You also meet Tailord here; help him escape (Be My Muse!) and he relocates to Tick Town so outfits and kitten quests can start in earnest.
After Pendulum, smash the orange crystal under the Hills sign near Tick Town’s teleporter to reach Tailord’s shop. That is also when Kingdom Hearts-inspired outfits become practical.
Caves introduce Arpeggio (Can I Get Your Autograph?) and the music-box delivery chain. Desert and canyon spaces introduce the mysterious explorer (Don’t Talk to Strangers) and the Canyon granny (A Grandma’s Love). Lantern Port is the sun-soaked tropical contrast reviewers keep screenshotting — vertical, bright, and stuffed with delayed collectibles.
Late game: clouds, depths, and the Tower
Celestial Kingdom / cloud lands host the Father Gorth encounter: rail slides, timed hits, and the series’ signature boss trick — a race-against-the-clock platforming stun break between damage windows. Bosses stay spoiler-light on patterns; the rule is the same as Wrath: movement first, greedy combos second.
Deepthorne and Chronos Aeternum appear in collectible roundups as later secret-heavy regions. Volcanic mountains and “lands between space and time” match press language for these spokes. Befriend N1-C0 when the story presents the robot companion beat (You’ve Got a Friend in Me). When the locks are gone, We’re Coming for You, Despair marks the Tower doors opening.
Inside the Tower you should expect reunion beats with Cuckoo (I Missed You), Gramps and the Veil (The Final Star, Master XII’s Secret), and the escape with Allira (Stick With Me). Don’t Go There! is the optional fall from the summit — die on purpose if you want the Bronze. This page will not narrate Despair’s last phase; read bosses after you have seen it.
Ability gates to remember
| Tool | Typical unlock window | What it opens |
|---|---|---|
| Blast | Early Tick Town combat rooms | Cracked walls, clustered trash mobs |
| Grapple | End of first world / demo arc | Vertical secrets, Wrath interrupts, blacksmith anvil |
| Temporal Shift | Perfect dodge, taught poorly | Freeze punishes; practice late, not early |
| Pendulum | End of Clockwork Academy | Orange crystals, Tailord’s Hills path |
| Glide / rails / zip | Mid campaign | Cloud and port lines, boss arenas |
If you are stuck, you almost never need more damage. You need the next verb or a Tick Town NPC you have not revisited. How to Unlock Abilities stays the mechanic reference; this page is the order.
Collectible discipline so the story stays fun
Pick up hearts and shards on the road. Leave kitten chases, Wally hunts, and stubborn Rainbow Ingots for after credits unless they sit on your feet. Duskfade rewards curiosity on a first visit, then asks you to return. That is intentional, not a bug in the trophies list.
Length: plan a weekend for story plus a second evening for Platinum if you used Story Mode. Difficulty settings are covered separately in Difficulty. Single-player only — there is no co-op.
Where to go next
Stuck on the first boss: Beat Wrath. Lost in geography: Biomes. Need people: NPCs. Ready to buy skins: Outfits and Rainbow Ingots. Still on the fence: launch review.
Frequently Asked Questions

No. Start a new save for the retail game. The [demo walkthrough](/demo/walkthrough/) is still useful for Wrath practice.
When do I get Pendulum in Duskfade?
Near the end of the Clockwork Academy / underwater academy arc. It breaks orange crystals, including the Hills path to Tailord in Tick Town.
Is there a map?
No mini-map. Use landmarks, Cuckoo hints, and the Tick Town teleporter. See [Tick Town](/world/tick-town/) and [biomes](/world/biomes/).
What order should I play the regions?
Tick Town hub, Ezarus Forest, Clockwork Academy, then desert / Lantern Port, cloud lands, Deepthorne, Chronos Aeternum, and the Clock Tower as locks break. Follow story markers when unsure.
